Mogherini, Juncker pushes Renzi towards Plan B

The former Luxembourg premier, after the rejection of Federica Mogherini's candidacy at the July 16 summit, pushes Renzi to change his objective - "Italy needs a plan B: a new candidate or a new chair" - Renzi, who is publicly committed on behalf of the foreign minister, he risks a strong setback in internal politics.

Mogherini, Juncker pushes Renzi towards Plan B

Problems continue around the formation of the new European Commission chaired by Jean-Claude Juncker. Above all, the Italian choice to nominate Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini as High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security is causing discussion, a choice that prompted the former Luxembourg premier to put pressure on Italy to change candidate.

On Friday, in fact, Juncker clarified to Matteo Renzi that, given that the majority of states vetoed Mogherini's name during the July 16 summit, if Italy wants to secure the position that most interests it, must necessarily and quickly resort to a plan B. A new candidate or even a new chair.

One of the problems at the moment is the different interpretation of the summit of 16 July. For Juncker it was the meeting that sanctioned the rejection of Mogherini, for Renzi, who has now committed himself to the Foreign Minister's name and who would also suffer a setback in internal politics from his failure, the meeting simply clarified the procedures appointment, postponing everything to the August 30 summit.

The desire of part of the European Union to reserve the role of High Representative to a candidate from Eastern Europe, such as the Bulgarian Commissioner for Development Kristalina Georgieva, also weighs heavily. A candidate from the East. A solution that would satisfy many, but would inevitably displease a big name like Italy. The only certain thing at the moment is that we are in a stalemate that nobody needs.
