Luxembourg Ministry of Defense: first solar military drone, Leonardo signs an agreement

Leonardo has signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Defense of Luxembourg and with the aerospace company Skydweller Aero “to explore new collaboration opportunities” on first solar-powered drone “fully electric, with high carrying capacity, long-distance transport and perpetual flight”. The Italian defense group communicates it in a note, explaining that, with this agreement, the project "is enriched with new research and development opportunities, particularly in the ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) field".

The device is called Skydweller and is "currently under development with the Spanish-American start-up Skydweller Aero, of which Leonardo is a strategic investor and main industrial partner - continues the note - For Skydweller Leonardo also operates as prime Luxembourg defense contractor".

The new agreement "will initially see the Defense of Luxembourg coordinate the transport of the drone from Albacete, Spain, to the Caribbean - Leonardo explains - where it will carry out a series of long-lasting in-flight tests and other demonstration activities, in support of the Skydweller Aero contract with the US Department of Defense (DoD) to validate zero-emission, long-duration flight for military applications."

Meanwhile, Leonardo also presented al Mise the optimization plan of its Electronics division. In the course of the meetings, a note reads, in particular the passages on the transfer of activities and resources of the Giugliano towards that of Fusaro, of the Pomezia site towards the sites of Cisterna di Latina e Roma Tiburtina, of the site of Carseldine towards the site of Roma Tiburtina, of the site of Taranto towards that of Grottaglie.

It was also specified that in the Pisa plant of Helicopters Division the activities managed up to now at the Pisa site will converge, while at that of Genoa Puccini the resources and activities currently carried out in will be transferred Genoa Hermada. In the Lazio area, Leonardo has also confirmed the creation of the Logistics Hub of Santa Palomba in which all the activities of receipt, logistics and storage of materials from Lazio will be managed.
