Minali on the Vatican's economic board

It was the Pope himself who wanted the former CEO of Cattolica Assicurazioni to join the Holy See's financial supervisory body

Minali on the Vatican's economic board

Alberto Minali is back on the field, and he does it in the service of none other than Pope Francis. The Veneto manager, formerly of Generali and removed last October from the position of CEO of Cattolica Assicurazioni, was wanted by the Pope himself in the Council for the Economy of the Vatican, the body that supervises the finances of the Holy See. "When I received the news of the appointment, with the official decree written in Latin - Minali himself commented with satisfaction in the Corriere della Sera - I thought: this is Providence that sees and provides for everything".

The appointment of Minali, in addition to representing a prestigious redemption opportunity for a high-value manager, unfortunately overwhelmed by the internal struggles of Cattolica (which in the meantime has capitulated, approving the long-awaited transformation from a cooperative into a joint-stock company and moving towards the merger with Generali) , also testifies that the paths of the Veronese company and those of the high ecclesiastical hierarchies have decidedly diverged. Already the bishop of Verona, Monsignor Giuseppe Zenti, had come out publicly - a more unique than rare fact - warning about the risks that Cattolica, transforming itself into a joint-stock company, betrayed the original cooperative values to sacrifice them to the god of profit.

Now the call from Minali, who is also in dispute with Cattolica for a dismissal which according to the former CEO took place without just cause: hence the request for 9,6 million euros. As for the Council for the Economy, the Vatican's highest economic body, Minali is the only Italian and the only man among the laymen indicated by Pope Francis. The board, again coordinated by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, is completed by six women: Charlotte Kreuter-Kirchhof, Eva Castillo Sanz, Leslie Jane Ferrar, Marija Kolak, María Concepción Osákar Garaicoechea, and Ruth Maria Kelly.
