Milan, a retrospective on Marc Chagall from 17 September 2014

The Marc Chagall exhibition. A retrospective 1908-1985 which will open on September 17 at Palazzo Reale in Milan is the largest retrospective ever dedicated to Marc Chagall in Italy, with over 220 works - mainly paintings, starting from 1908, the date in which Chagall created his first painting, Le petit salon, up to the last, monumental works of the 80s – who will guide visitors along the entire artistic journey of Marc Chagall, juxtaposing, often for the first time, works still in the collections of the heirs, and sometimes unpublished, with masterpieces from the major museums of the world, such as the MoMa, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the National Gallery in Washington, the National Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Center Pompidou, as well as 50 public and private collections that have generously collaborated.

Within a rigorous and complete chronological itinerary, the exhibition will be divided into sections, starting from the early works created in Russia; during the first French stay, and the subsequent return to Russia until 1921; with the autobiography written by Chagall at the time of his definitive abandonment of Russia, the second period of his exile will open, first in France and then, in the 40s, in America where he will also experience the tragedy of the death of his beloved wife Bella ; with his return to France and the definitive decision to settle on the Côte d'Azur, Chagall would rediscover his more relaxed poetic language, soothed by the colors and atmosphere of the Midi.

The Marc Chagall exhibition. A retrospective 1908-1985 is conceived by Claudia Zevi & Partners and curated by Claudia Zevi with the collaboration of Meret Meyer.
