Thursday 11 July will be a hot day for the Milanese. Not just because of scorching temperatures of the last few weeks, but also and above all for uno 24-hour strike that will involve the entire ATM network, the company that covers the entire city of Milan with subways, buses and trams.

MILAN, ATM STRIKE JULY 11: THE CAUSES

The strike was called by the CUB transport union and will involve all ATM employees. At the basis of the protest, explains the Basic Unitary Confederation, there are very different reasons. Let's strike, reads the note from the trade union association, “against the liberalization, privatization, and financialization of the Milan public transport system and the hinterland; against the tenders for the services currently managed by the ATM Group and for the re-internalisation of the services assigned under contract and/or sub-contract also complementary to transport; against the listing on the stock exchange and the sale of the ATM Group shares; for the direct in-house assignment of services managed by the Atm Group; for the direct assignment to the Atm Group of the TPL services of the Milanese Metropolitan City”.

The strike, as mentioned, will last 24 hours. The protest will start at 8.45am and continue until 15.00pm on 11 July. Three-hour break to respect the traditional guarantee band and then it starts again at 18.00 until the end of the service.

NET STRIKE AND COMO-BRUNATE FUNICULAR

The transport strike of 11 July, ATM specifies on its website, will also concern the workers of the NET line in Monza. In this case, however, the times change. “the agitation is foreseen from 9 to 11,50 and from 14,50 at the end of the service. For the Extra Urban Service agitation is foreseen from 8,45 to 15 and from 18 at the end of the service”, reads the note.

The strike could also affect the work of the staff of the Como-Brunate funicular: in this case the stirring is foreseen from 8.30 to 16.30 and from 19.30 at the end of the service.

There is a risk of a day of chaos throughout the Milanese hinterland, even if the precedents give hope that the inconveniences will be contained. In fact, during the last strikes, enrollments were very low. Taking the last two agitations as an example: on 17 May only 8 per cent of workers joined the strike called by USB Lavoro Privato, while on 8 March the strike called by CUB Trasporti, USB and SGB was only by 17 percent.
