Milan: experimental music and contemporary art at HangarBicocca

Wednesday 5 March, at 21.00, Pirelli HangarBicocca presents a unique event: Mika Vainio, leading figure in the field of experimental music and founder of the electronic duo Pan Sonic, will play live the installation by the artist Micol Assaël Mindfall, exhibited in the personal exhibition ILIOKATAKINIOMUMASTILOPSARODIMAKOPIOTITA.

During the live, Mika Vainio will position himself outside the work and manipulating analogical musical instruments, will amplify, rework and live reinterpret the sound of the 21 rotating engines that compose it Mindfall. He will place the work of Micol Assaël in resonance with the industrial environment of Pirelli HangarBicocca, offering the public a actual perceptual experience which promises to be a further performative and sensorial expansion of the whole exhibition.

Mika Vainio (Helsinki 1963, lives and works in Berlin) is historically associated with Pan Sonic, a band founded together with compatriot Ilpo Väsäinen and distinguished itself as an excellence in the contemporary electronic music circuit since the early XNUMXs. From the album Vakio (1995), ad Aaltopiiri (2000), until their last Gravitons (2010), Pan Sonic moved away from a minimal industrial and techno sound to arrive at a more rarefied but also aggressive music, which questions the perceptive capacity. Characteristic of the duo has always been a certain performative nature, closer to conceptual artistic operations than to the dimension of the concert traditionally understood. As with Pan Sonic, also solo Mika Vainio has continued collaborative practices with musicians, artists, choreographers. Mika Vainio's sound, which takes the form of abstract drones or minimal avant-techno music, is physical, characterized by analog warmth and electronic hardness and completely unique.

Mindfall (2004-2007) is an installation by Micol Assaël made up of a salvaged container containing a chair and tables on which 21 electric motors are arranged. Turned on intermittently, almost composing a symphony, the machines generate a delicate noise and a magnetic sound. Conceived and presented in 2004 at Manifesta 5, the work was presented in a second version in 2007 in Berlin, in the spaces of the Johann König gallery, when Mika Vainio "played" the installation for the first and last time. Mindfall is one of the 5 installations exhibited in the Micol Assaël exhibition

ILIOKATAKINIOMUMASTILOPSARODIMAKOPIOTITA, visible in the spaces of Pirelli HangarBicocca until 4 May 2014.
