Milan Fashion Week, when fashion is sustainability

Like every September, Milan returns to being the international fashion capital for a week. There Fashion Week is scheduled from 17 to 23 September and as per tradition it is dedicated to the following year's spring/summer collection. Lots of news, fashion shows, but above all one certainty: never before has fashion been more and more a driving force for the economy, not only of the Lombard capital, which has been organizing the most prestigious fashion shows in the world since 1958 (along with Paris and New York ), but for the whole country.

In fact, fashion means money and also work: just on the eve of the appointment with the Milanese week, the data say that the sector employs over 580 thousand in Italy alone, in 2018, and that there are more than 11 figures sought - again in Italy - in the sector, the great majority of which in the clothing industry (almost 5.000), followed by that of accessories (about 2.000) and footwear (just under 800), to which are added the significant numbers of the reference retail (3.500) .

Lombardy is in the lead – also considering the role of Milan, the Italian capital of fashion, which therefore beats Rome – with over 2.800 open searches. Followed by Veneto, in second place with about 1.400 positions, and Tuscany, with 1.300 positions. In the standings then there are Emilia Romagna (over 1.200) and, a little further away, Lazio, just below the 1.000 mark.

As usual, the week dedicated to high-end women's clothing will send the whole city into ferment, once again with significant numbers: 58 fashion shows, 110 presentations and 54 events for a total of 170 collections. The two watchwords of this edition are “sustainability” and “internationalisation”.

In fact, with the Fashion Week, the Green Carpet Fashion Award, the event dedicated to sustainable fashion, scheduled for Sunday 23 September. Carlo Capasa and Livia Firth will do the honors at the Teatro alla Scala for the third edition, and there is great expectation for the announced staging, in the name of eco-sustainability.

The most important brands, on the other hand, will parade in some of the most iconic places in the city, from the Scalone dell'Arengario to the Sala delle Cariatidi of Palazzo Reale to the Spazio Cavallerizze of the Museum of Science and Technology. But they will also occupy new spaces such as the Cozzi municipal swimming pool, chosen as the location by Benetton.

Among the new entries on the calendar are found DROMe (100% Made in Italy brand founded by Marianna Rosati, absolute protagonist of the Paris Fashion Week), Boss and Peter Pilotto who has chosen to present his spring/summer 2020 collection in Milan. Again: Simona Marziali-MRZ, and Shuting Qiu.

Starting this year, the Municipality of Milan has decided to give a great gift to those who cannot access the exclusive fashion shows: a maxi screen installed in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, corner of Piazza San Babila, where they will be broadcast in streaming.
