Milan Fashion Week is underway. From 20 to 26 February the Lombard capital will be transformed into world capital of fashion and luxury with a packed calendar of fashion shows and events dedicated to women's collections for autumn/winter 2024-2025. Above all, the three new entries at the creative direction of three great Italian prêt-à-porter maisons – Adrian Appiolaza at Moschino, Matteo Tamburini at Tod's and Walter Chiapponi at Blumarine – and the second women's collection by Gucci's new creative director, Sabato De, are highly anticipated Sarno. Without forgetting the great classics, from Prada to Armani, from Versace to Fendi, passing through Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, Etro, Bottega Veneta and Max Mara. There is also great curiosity about Diesel, which will also open the doors of its show to non-experts by distributing 1000 admissions to attend the fashion show and to peek behind the scenes of the event.
In total they will be 161 appointments scheduled, but everyone's eyes will be focused above all on 56 fashion shows physical including 2 doubles. There are also 5 digital fashion shows, 67 presentations, 7 presentations by appointment and 26 events that will liven up the city until February 26th.
More than 100 thousand people at Milan Fashion Week: tourist spending above 70 million
But the good news isn't just about the parades and scheduled events. Presenting the fashion week calendar, the president of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, Carlo Capasa, stated: “As regards attendance, we expect, according to the data from the Chamber of Commerce, more than 100 thousand people. A 10% increase compared to the last season and therefore a good sign for the state of health of Italian fashion".
Respectable numbers, which are added to those relating to related industries. In fact, the estimates of the Confcommercio Milano research office speak of a induced tourist spending between 20 and 26 February equal to 70,4 million euro with a growth of 22,6% compared to 2019.
The expected impact on the city and calculated by Confcommercio translates into almost 50 thousand foreign visitors, or +3,1% compared to the year before the outbreak of the pandemic. The attendance of the students will also grow Italian visitors (63.000 estimated), which therefore marks a +3,3% on 2019. Taking the total, overall, the inflow will increase by 3,2%.
“All the research we and the major institutes have done tell us that in the next 5 years Italian fashion will grow around 20%, it means that we have 5 good years – underlined Capasa – This probably won't be the best but we have to look at the medium term”. Italian fashion, therefore, "will continue to perform very well".
In the first 11 months of 2023, turnover recorded growth of +4% compared to 2022, bringing the total to over 102 billion euros. Almost 90 billion went abroad: “The export of the fashion sector rose by 4,2% in 2023 – commented Matteo Zoppas, president of Ice Agenzia, Camera Moda's partner for the fashion week – in a note – and the import-export trade balance reached 40 billion. The main destination countries are confirmed as France, Germany and the USA; the most significant growth was recorded in France and Japan, both at +16%”.
Average receipt of one thousand euros
“Events like fashion week consolidate the relationship between Milan, Italy, fashion and Made in Italy, with an advantage for the city. The average expected receipt is one thousand euros", said Alessia Cappello, councilor for economic development and work of the Municipality of Milan. And the positive effects will not only be had by luxury shops: “Revenues from small shops of proximity will rise by 10%”, underlined Cappello again.
