Milan, antiques on "travel memories"

An evening with Milanese antique dealers to discover the Grand Tour, Thursday 13 October, from 19.00 pm, at the Circolo del Commercio (Palazzo Bovara) Milan.

Milan, antiques on "travel memories"

Coined by Richard Lassels on his 1670 trip to Italy, the term "Grand Tour" has come to refer to journeys undertaken in southern Europe with a training and educational purpose.

Recognized and financed by governments and academies, promoted by the nobility and shared by the richest and most ambitious bourgeoisie, this trip to the continent has been documented as the first episode of mass tourism and has become an institution for pilgrims, humanists and lovers of antiquity.

The ultimate and essential destination of the trip was Italy where the educational process was perfected through an immersion in antiquity in search of the roots of European culture. There is no field of knowledge in which Italy is not capable of instilling an inimitable lesson in its visitors: the foreign traveler who visits Italy, whether he is a student, diplomat or art lover, opens up to the ways of knowing.

Probably the destinies of the history of European art would have been different if many of its protagonists had not drawn from this extraordinary experience that still today remains eternally immortalized in the words and lines of the most famous voyageurs: from Goethe to Montesquieu, from Cochin to Coryat, by Montaigne and Gibbon.

The Antiquari Milanesi association is promoting an evening dedicated to the theme of the "Grand Tour" with an exhibition of antiques on the theme of "travel memories", enriched by a conference on the subject held by the architect. De Paoli. The evening will take place in the historic setting of Palazzo Bovara, which it will be possible to visit accompanied by a guide.

Innovative initiative for the area, Grand Tour, aims to promote and sensitize guests towards the "beauty". Thus, antique dealers become disseminators and custodians of artistic culture to create aggregation, comparison and growth on the subject.
An evening dedicated to antiques and non-antique enthusiasts, who will be able to discover and appreciate paintings by Venetian landscape painters such as Bernardo Canal or Francesco Guardi, lacquerware, geographical maps from 1823, minute mosaics, marine chronometers, gilded bronze statues, terracotta masks , in short, objects, collections, images and references to the immense cultural and historical heritage that the theme suggests.

The exhibition will also feature works by artists: Giovanni Boldini, Emilio Gola, Moses Bianchi, Carlo Grubacs, Lord Mancini, Giorgio Belloni and many others.
