Milan-Inter: 93 years ago the first derby at San Siro

Saturday 21rd September San Siro will host the derby number 224 between Milan and Inter. And he'll do it like a gorgeous 93-year-old. Indeed, today, 19 September, is the anniversary of the inauguration of the Stadium, which took place in 1926.

Also on that day 93 years ago, to launch the newborn Scala del Calcio, a derby race was held Milan-Inter. In that case, however, it was a friendly organized for the occasion. The Nerazzurri won, with a score more suited to tennis than football: 6-3.

The first official match was played a few weeks later, on 3 October, for Milan's debut match in the 1926-1927 season. Also on that occasion the Rossoneri made up for a defeat: at the end of the game the scoreboard (which was not yet digital...) read 2-1 for the Sampierdanese, great-grandmother of today's Sampdoria.

In 1935 San Siro was purchased by the Municipality of Milan, which expanded it, increasing the capacity from 35 to 55 seats. Twenty years later the stadium underwent a drastic transformation: the seats rose to 100, then reduced to 85 for safety reasons, of which 60 seated and the others standing. Since 1980 the structure has been named after Giuseppe Meazza.

Today Milan and Inter continue to reiterate their desire to build a new stadiumrather than buying and renovating the current facility. A position that the Municipality does not share, but with which, perhaps, the mayor beppe room he will have to come to terms: “San Siro is the history of football, from here we should start again – wrote the mayor on Facebook – It is clear that it is not the administration that wants to give up, but the clubs. As Mayor I have a duty to listen to the proposals and, in any case, to enforce the rules. And so will all Milanese politics, which will already meet Milan and Inter today to start the path of knowledge and study of the project by the City Council, with the aim of allowing the Chamber to express itself on the matter ".

Meanwhile, on Saturday at 21 the Milan-Inter derby will still be played in the old San Siro. From today, a splendid 93 year old.
