Migrants: EU summit, but London closes

While the migrant emergency continues to grow, British Home Secretary Theresa May calls for a reform of the free movement of the Community. The intention of Great Britain, in fact, would be to authorize the stay in the country only to those who have a job, instead closing the doors to the many unemployed who come from other EU countries, which brought the British migration balance to an all-time high out of twelve months.

According to May, the current level of immigration would not be sustainable for the country's infrastructure and services, and has led to the need for the government "to renegotiate Britain's relationship with the EU is so important”.

“Reducing immigration outside the EU – explains the minister – does not mean a failure to respect the principle of free movement. When it was initially enshrined, free movement meant the freedom to move to work, not the freedom to cross borders to look for work or take advantage of social security policies".

According to May, the Schengen agreement fueled the migrant crisis, which eliminates systematic border controls and to which Great Britain does not adhere: current problems "have been exacerbated by the European system of free movement".

Meanwhile, just Great Britain, together with Germany and France, has asked for the urgent convening of an EU summit, within the next week.

The requests of the ministers, in addition to the summit, which was convened for 14 September in Brussels, are to implement the of registration and identification for migrants who apply for asylum, as well as the compilation of a list of safe countries to which migrants who are not entitled to asylum can be returned.
