Migrants, Renzi: "Ready to veto the EU budget"

"We give 20 billion to Europe and it gives us back 12: this mechanism is not good, especially if Hungary and Slovakia lend us morals and then don't give us a hand on migrants": thus the prime minister in the recording of the episode of Porta a Porta – Renzi also spoke on the story of Goro and Gorino.

Migrants, Renzi: "Ready to veto the EU budget"

"We give 20 billion to Europe and it gives us back 12, if Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia give us morals on immigrants, allow Italy to say 'Guys, the mechanism is finished'". The prime minister said, Matteo Renzi, on the Porta a Porta broadcast. And when asked whether Italy is willing, for this reason, to veto the EU budget, he replies: "Absolutely yes".

The government is therefore ready to veto the EU budget if the Eastern countries do not welcome the migrants: "I would like all together - said the premier on Rai1 -, majority and opposition, without dividing us, to tell these countries that the mechanism is finished. I would like everyone to say that the government's position is Italy's positionRenzi added. “The Monti government has established that we give 20 billion and receive 12, but if Hungary and Slovakia lecture us about our money and then don't give us a hand with migrants, that's not good”.

“The story of Goro and Gorino is difficult to judge”, Renzi also said. “On the one hand there is an attitude of understanding but not of sharing for a difficult situation, towards a part of the population that is very tired, and is worried about the news of new arrivals. But on the other hand we are talking about women and children. It probably should have been better managed by the state. But I want to be clear: the Italy that I know, when there are 12 women and 8 children, goes out of its way to solve the problem”. And he thanks the Navy and the Coast Guard: “I am proud of our armed forces and I am proud of the Navy, the Coast Guard and all those who do their utmost to save lives. The EU should make a monument to these people, far from speeches. Sooner or later they should be given the Nobel Peace Prize”.

But for the premier, the flow of migrants must be stopped as soon as possible. “Now we are able to manage it, winter arrives, sea conditions worsen, but we have a maximum of six months time. You have to block them from the start. Either we block the flow by 2017 or Italy can't handle another year like the past one”. And on this "I ask that all Italians stay with us, that we do not divide".
