Migrants: the EU freezes Italy, Trump gives in on children

The crisis of the European Union on the issue of migrants is now one step away. In preparation for the EU Council at the end of the month, a mini summit of 10 will be held in Belgium on Sunday - including Italy - and on the table there will be an agreement proposal developed by the President of the Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, under the supervision of Berlin and Paris.

The draft compromise, which the Sherpas will begin negotiating today, opens as follows: "Unilateral and uncoordinated solutions would put Schengen at risk". Then, the text touches on the following points:

  • Closure of the EU's external borders thanks to a 10-man European Coast Guard and a European Border Police, as requested by Visegrad and the Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
  • Opening of camps in Africa managed by IOM and UNHCR to send illegal migrants.
  • Stop to secondary movements, with very harsh controls to prevent border crossings within the EU: this measure serves German Chancellor Angela Merkel, targeted at home by the Bavarian allies of the CSU, led by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, who threaten to do so fall if it does not solve the problem of migrants arriving in Germany illegally crossing the borders of Southern Europe.
  • Redistribution of refugees and asylum seekers on a voluntary basis.

The last point sparked a furious reaction from Salvini, who claims to impose mandatory redistribution among EU partners (even though his Hungarian ally, Viktor Orban, has recently inserted a ban on welcoming economic migrants into the Constitution). The number one of the Viminale thundered: "Rather than accepting a written declaration from France and Germany, it is better for Conte to save the money for the flight".

The Italian interior minister even threatened to close land borders as well as ports, in order to prevent the return to Italy of migrants who - in violation of the Dublin treaty - after being identified in our country manage to cross the border (almost always to France).

In the middle of the ford is the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, who feels made fun of by the allies: the missions in Paris and Berlin had given him hope, but now he is ready not to sign the document drawn up by Juncker and to fail the pre-summit on Sunday.

Meanwhile, as Europe faces a stalemate, the migrant crisis appears to have unblocked itself in the United States. For electoral and image reasons, US President Donald Trump has convinced himself to sign a decree that will prevent the separation of the families of irregular immigrants. The recordings of the desperate cries of children separated from their parents have shocked the country, forcing a step back to number one in the White House. A decision on which the pressure of the first lady Melania and the daughter of the President, Ivanka, weighed. But the words of Pope Francis also had a certain importance, who in an interview with Reuters criticized the American policy of separating the families of those trying to enter the US: "Let us not let fear prevent us from welcoming" .
