Only Mattarella can get Italy out of trouble in the crisis with France over migrants - Macron wants clarifications, Madrid regrets Draghi and Germany defends NGOs

Migrants, Italy increasingly alone: ultimatum from France and distancing from Germany and Spain

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's meeting with American President Biden at the Bali summit will not be enough to pull Italy out of the isolation into which it has plunged itself in Europe on the issue of migrants. And the meeting of EU foreign ministers, set for today Monday 14 November in Brussels, will hardly serve to unblock the impasse despite the requests made by Italian minister Antonio Tajani. The most important help, at this point, is placed in the hands of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.

Therefore, the isolation of Italy is growing, which must register the tough stance not only of France but also of Germany and Spain.

France reminds Italy of its obligations and calls Europe into the field

"The unilateral, unacceptable, ineffective and unjust decision by the current Italian government requires European responses", reiterated the French government spokesman Olivier Véran. Véran said that "the first response was of a humanitarian nature, and this has been done" and that "the second response is to remind Italy of its obligations" and "if it refuses to do so, consider any useful measure" . For the spokesman of the French government "the time has come, and we have done so, for France to ask Europe to decide very quickly what actions to take".

«The Italians - he acknowledged - are our friends, our neighbors, our brothers. Italy is France's second trading partner» but «Italy of Giorgia Meloni is the big loser», he added, «because it usually has a European solidarity mechanism», in particular with France e Germany who undertake to relocate migrants "in exchange for Italy accepting the ships". Instead now «if Italy does not respect the fundamental commitment of the European solidarity mechanism, we will not give the expected compensation which was to welcome 3 migrants currently on Italian territory". The position of Paris is clear and clear and in Ventimiglia the queues at the Ventimiglia border have returned for the reinforced checks by the French police in an attempt to block secondary movements (migrants who move from the country of first entry to go and seek asylum in another Member State), as Paris had announced in recent days

Sanchez's Spain does not sign and regrets Draghi

And the socialist government of Pedro Sanchez is also in favor of the current European scheme, decided last July, which made no secret of regretting the Draghi government and on Sunday distanced itself from the request for a change of gear on advanced migration by Italy and shared by Greece, Malta and Cyprus. Spain has not signed the declaration of the Mediterranean countries on the "outlawed NGOs" and everything is postponed, at this point, to the official meeting on December 9, the first between Prime Minister Sanchez and President Giorgia Meloni.

Even Berlin distances itself: the NGOs deserve recognition

Germany also distances itself from the Italian position, however, not going too far to announce a block on the relocation of migrants. But Berlin is also clear: “In 2022 – said the ambassador in Rome Viktor Elbling – there are already over 1.300 people dead or missing in the Mediterranean. 12% of the survivors were rescued by NGOs. They save lives where help from states is lacking. Their humanitarian commitment deserves our recognition and our support".
