Migrants, Italy ready to close the ports

Italy formally exposes itself in Europe on the migrant emergency. After the massive landings of the last two days (almost 77 since the beginning of January according to data from the Interior Ministry) and the 12 rescues carried out by ships, the Italian government has decided to mandate Ambassador Maurizio Massari, EU representative, to formally ask Commissioner for migrations, Dimitris Avramopoulos, the theme of landings in Italy. This was reported by Ansa, according to which the Executive would now deem the landing of all the ships carrying out rescue operations in our country unsustainable.

The Italian government is even considering the possibility of denying access to Italian ports to lifeboats sailing in front of Libya, flying a foreign flag, including Frontex units. A hypothesis which, if confirmed by the authorities, would be sensational since it implies the closure of the routes to the ships of many international non-profit organizations operating in the Mediterranean and which have so far operated in close contact with the Italian Coast Guard.

The President of the Republic also expressed his opinion on the Migrant emergency this morning, Sergio Mattarella: "Italy is at the forefront in the Mediterranean to save thousands of human lives in the context of an epochal phenomenon - said the head of state while visiting Ottawa, Canada - And this happens at the borders of Europe, without yet arousing in our continent neither adequate awareness nor the emergence of sufficiently shared sensitivities, a necessary prelude to incisive common actions”.
