MIGRANTS - Grillo and Salvini increasingly united in the fight and Forza Italia is divided

The tests of anti-system and anti-Renzi convergence between Grillo and Salvini have been underway for some time but it is increasingly clear that the common ground between the two populisms will be immigration - Yesterday the Northern League secretary replied to the CEI that he had stamped anti-migrant politicians as "cheap salesmen" and today Grillo confirms the hard line of M5S

MIGRANTS - Grillo and Salvini increasingly united in the fight and Forza Italia is divided

Two clues won't prove it but they certainly fuel suspicions not to mention the certainty that general tests of convergence have been underway for some time between Beppe Grillo's 5 Star Movement and Matteo Salvini's Lega in an anti-Renzi and anti-system function , pace of the minority of the Democratic Party that lingering in rearguard battles - such as the one that would like to dismantle the reform of the Senate to start all over again - has not yet understood what the real stakes are and what the battlefield is foreshadowing in view of the future political elections and the ballot between the lists: no longer the clash between right and left but between anti-system forces (Lega and M5S) and the politics of reforms of which Renzi's party aspires to be the driving force.

The ground on which the populist alliance between Grillo and Salvini takes shape is immigration policy and the fight against migrants and the words of the two leaders of the last few hours are illuminating. Yesterday Salvini had furiously replied to the CEI that he had branded anti-migrant politicians as "cheap salesmen". “Whoever defends this clandestine invasion, which is ruining Italy, either doesn't understand or gains from it” the League secretary had argued with little diplomacy.

Today, Beppe Grillo arrives to Salvini's rescue, who does not tolerate distinctions on the anti-migrant hard line and sticks with those in the M5S who had distanced themselves from the pro-League drift of the grillini.

Those who don't know which way to turn is Forza Italia, which is between a rock and a hard place. Those who dream of a common list with the League - like Toti or like Brunetta - obviously defend Salvini also on migrants, those who do not want Forza Italia to drown in the mortal embrace with the League distance themselves like the former minister Maria Stella Gelmini who on the immigration uses cautious words.

For now only the Democratic Party is not divided on immigration policy but to beat the neo-populist alliance, even Renzi's party would need a cohesion that for now is only a mirage. Also because, if he does not want to be overwhelmed by the demagoguery of his opponents, sooner or later the Premier too will have to make difficult choices on immigration policy that could once again turn up their noses in his internal minority.
