Migrants: competition of idiocies in the Government but no concrete proposals are arriving from the opposition either

The tragedy of the migrants who drowned a few meters from the Calabrian coasts was the occasion for a very sad festival of paradoxical jokes by members of the majority but even from the opposition, no feasible proposals have so far arrived to deal with an immense drama

Migrants: competition of idiocies in the Government but no concrete proposals are arriving from the opposition either

Our political, government and opposition parties have a special talent for turning tragedy into farce. Backed by a good part of the communication workers, they managed to make the painful one tragedy of migrants drowned a few meters from the Calabrian coasts, an unreal show, full of falsehoods, hypocrisies, improvised measures that only demonstrate that there is no awareness of the migratory phenomenon, or that, despite being aware of it, they have no ideas and skills to deal with it with rationality.

A demeaning show that tarnishes the memory of the drowned poor, many of them children, which aims to raise a fuss, without taking a step in the right direction. The minister of the interior, the prefect, started it Crying himself, saying it's the parents' fault because in those weather conditions they shouldn't have exposed their children to risk. Commendably, the minister went to the wreck site to see what could be done to help. But he should have limited himself to saying a few words of sincere condolences for the victims and support for the relatives, and perhaps arranging concrete aid for the survivors. Instead, with those statements he legitimized the opposition to accuse the government of negligence, or worse, of "state massacre" as a Northern newspaper, once considered very prestigious, put it.

Immigration: some are even calling for NATO intervention

An incredible uproar then followed. To try to put an end to the controversy, the Government hastily launched a decree in which he threatens very severe penalties for smugglers, saying he is willing to pick them up anywhere, along all seas and deserts. What he means is not clear. But perhaps a statement from the leader of the League in the Senate, Maximilian Romeo, can better clarify the thought (sic!) of the Government. Romeo said that it is Russia's fault that the departures of boats from Libya have increased (but the one wrecked in Calabria came from Turkey) and therefore it is not the EU but even NATO that should intervene. Which means that NATO should invade Libya, oust the rulers of Tripoli and Benghazi, and put governments capable of controlling the migratory phenomenon in their place. In short, Romeo, we don't know how consciously, he hopes for a war. It is difficult to say whether Prime Minister Meloni who for many years, when she was in opposition, preached a naval blockade, agrees to send our soldiers to Libya.

Migration is a European challenge that requires a concrete response

But the jokes of the government officials do not end there. Some argue that we should widen the net of regular immigration by trying to satisfy the demands of the productive world which is desperately looking for workers, on the one hand, and on the other hand offer a legal and guaranteed outlet to those who want to leave their own country. Well, but there are various problems. Who should manage these practices? Our consulates are not equipped. And then how can the correspondence between job offer and immigrant demand be managed? Who evaluates the skills required and offered? More generally, once the migrant settles in Italy with regular permission, who can prevent that after a few months he prefers to move to northern Europe where maybe he has relatives? And then, even if we increase the regular permits to 2-300 thousand, how can we guarantee that those who are rejected still do not try to embark on sea carts to reach our coasts? So we need one EU policy completely different from the current one and which is not limited to relocations, which have been a failure, nor to the request to amend the Schengen agreements which are only part of the problem. In reality, the various European countries should give up part of their sovereignty both on borders and on the entry of migrants. And this does not seem to be on the agenda at the moment, also because of the sovereign countries friends of the parties of our government.

Even the opposition lacks feasible proposals

But even beyond some noisy parliamentary declarations and some expressions of condolence, the opposition has certainly not come up with concrete and practicable ideas. The new secretary of the PD Elly Schlein attacked the Government for its gaffes and for the evident carelessness with which it moved, but as for proposals, it limited itself to saying that we must welcome everyone, that we are responsible for any accident that could happen in the Mediterranean (at least the central one East) and that we must have humanity for those desperate people fleeing war, persecution or hunger. Right, but then in practice we don't know how we have to equip ourselves to do this immense work. And then, is Schlein sure that Italian workers, the poor you want to address, really appreciate an exponential increase in immigrants?

The difficulties of setting up a real immigration policy

The truth is that our political debate really lacks the foundations to be able to set up a serious discussion on the immigration issue. Things are said that may appeal to an audience of our fellow citizens who are quite distracted and uncaring, such as Salvini's motto "let's help them at home". Well, but we must know that it is not the poorest who move but those who have reached a certain level of well-being and who have the ambition to improve. Paradoxically, helping them could increase the number of immigrants.

As long as the right exploits the fears of Italians who think they are being invaded by millions of refugees and the left remains a prisoner of its own Catholic-Marxist ideology, it will be difficult to set up a real immigration policy. THE closed ports di Salvini they were a failure. The Ius soli, which will also have to be implemented for various reasons, is not in itself a policy for immigrants. And then, if we don't begin to distinguish between refugees who are protected by international conventions, and so-called economic migrants, we won't be able to get a spider out of the hole. We will experience dramatic emotional outbursts when sea disasters occur near our coasts, while we will turn a blind eye when they occur near the Greek islands or in the Spanish Sahara.

Immigration. Causes, problems, solutions

Someone begins to say that on a problem that will accompany us for many more decades, an understanding between all the political forces is needed. Almost four years ago two experts like Guido Bolaffi e Joseph Terranova have published a book that explains many things about the migratory phenomenon and offers some concrete recipes. It must be for this reason that the opposing fans have silenced him. The book closes by recalling that the five producers who founded the five most important Hollywood production houses in the last century were five poor Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. The American Dream has been spread around the world by non-Americans, demonstrating the potential wealth that well-managed immigration can bring.

  1. ..what about Auci will save us "artificial intelligence"? I see very little of cultural and political intellect, I would say nothing… an ocean of mediocrity
