Microsoft: quarter disappoints, Surface PCs and tablets weigh

disappointment for Microsoft in the second quarter. The information technology giant reported revenues of $19,9 billion, down 10% from the same period last year and against expectations of $20,73 billion. Price cuts for Surface RT tablets accounted for $900 million.

In the quarter, the Redmond giant posted profits of $4,97 billion, against losses of $492 million recorded in the same period last year. In terms of earnings per share, the result moved to 59 cents from a red of 6 cents a share. Net of extraordinary items, the figure stopped at 52 basis points. The market was counting on a figure of 75 cents per share.

The slowdown in the personal computer market also weighed on the share's weak performance. The good news for Redmond's home instead comes from the business supply sector, which recorded a 14% jump in sales compared to the same quarter last year, reaching 7,2 billion dollars.

The negative result follows the announcement, which arrived last week, of a restructuring plan wanted by the managing director Steve Ballmer which plans to focus everything on mobile services and devices.

Pending the accounts, which arrived after the closure of Wall Street, the stock lost 0,84%, to 35,44 dollars per share. In the after-hours it was punished by losing almost 7%, to around 33,09 dollars per share.
