Microsoft fixes a bug from… 1995

The famous 'Windows 95' was launched in the eponymous year with great fanfare. It was the patient shoppers camped out in New Zealand's Windows stores who first grabbed the new operating system. Then, as the sun rose and the time zone advanced, the buying frenzy spread to other cities around the world. Alas, nobody knew it but Windows 95 had a problem: a small code door allowed anyone to hack into the PC and take over remote control.

The intrusion was possible starting from Internet Explorer 3.0. The incredible thing – indeed, the two incredible things – are: first, the 'bug' remained in all subsequent versions of Windows ever since, up until the current Windows 8; second, no one ever noticed, at least until now. Fortunately, who finally noticed it is not a malevolent hacker, but the same division of 'cybersecurity' of Microsoft (IBM X-Force), which is distributing the correct software.
