Microsoft-Nokia, backfire?

Microsoft-Nokia, backfire?

It is no mystery that in the great international 5G match Nokia is becoming (together with Ericsson) an important alternative to Huawei, just as it is no mystery that the United States, left out of the challenge, is betting strongly on a European champion not to leave to the Chinese rivals the realization of the strategic infrastructure also in western territory. With these premises, therefore, it does not seem a gamble to hypothesize an operation that would see Nokia end up in American hands. Maybe acquired for the second time by Microsoft: in fact, the two companies were already the protagonists of a first marriage in 2013, which however turned out to be a sensational flop.

Back then, Microsoft paid out $7 billion to acquire the Finnish group's mobile assets. The goal was to create a third technological hub that could rival iPhone and Android on the smartphone market. But the Windows Phone experiment failed miserably, so much so that in 2015 Nokia was forced to declare the smartphone segment bankrupt, which caused thousands of lost jobs and even jeopardized the survival of a brand that until a few years earlier was successful state. But now the company founded in the town of the same name has risen from its ashes and has made software and network infrastructure its core business. Placing itself in a highly competitive position in the race for 5G.

This feature makes it terribly attractive for large US groups, who can't wait to make up for the lost ground compared to Huawei, by getting their hands on a European and therefore geopolitically friendly company. In pole position, according to what Forbes reports, quoting several analysts, there would be Intel and Microsoft, for a sensational marriage-encore: "Nokia's expertise in 5G - writes the site - appeals to Microsoft, which this year has already placed two acquisitions in that market, taking over Metaswitch and Affirmed Networks.” Meanwhile Nokia continues its expansion: Just last week it finalized a deal to become the largest equipment supplier to British Telecom, the UK's largest telecommunications company.
