Microsoft and Facebook build an Internet super-cable in the Atlantic

A submarine cable more than 6.600 km long that will transmit data at a bandwidth speed of 160 terabits per second. Two Internet giants are working on the new network that will connect Europe and the United States, crossing the entire Atlantic Ocean, Facebook and Microsoft: The two companies announced a partnership to lay a high-capacity undersea data transmission cable that will run from the Northern Virginia hub to Bilbao, Spain.

The cable, called "MAREA", will be able to guarantee a bandwidth equal to 160 terabits per second, equal to 16 million times the average speed of a home connection in the United States, and its implementation will be managed by Telxius, the company specialized in the creation of network infrastructures owned by telecommunications giant Telefonica.

The works of this ambitious project will begin at August 2016 to then finish by October 2017. This project marks a new important step forward in the construction of next-generation infrastructure dedicated to optimizing internet performance and accessibility. As, in fact, points out Frank Rey of Microsoft, the new submarine cable "will be used to better serve users by providing reliable and low latency connectivity".
