Metroweb between Telecom Italia and Vodafone: Antitrust "neutral" but attentive to concentrations

Antitrust spotlight on Metroweb: in the tender for its acquisition between Telecom Italia and Vodafone, the Authority says that "for now" it remains "neutral" but warns that "if the operation were to take place, it will undergo careful analysis on our part, especially on possible hypotheses of concentrations to the detriment of the competition"

The duel between Telecom Italia and Vodafone for the purchase of Metroweb, the Milanese company controlled by Cassa depositi e prestiti and F21, turns on the spotlight of the Antitrust Authority for its possible effects on the competitive structures of the broadband telecommunications market and ultrawide.

In an interview with the weekly magazine "Milano Finanza", the president of the Antitrust, Giovanni Pitruzzella maintains that "for now the Authority remains neutral" but warns that "if the operation were to take place, it will be subjected to a careful analysis by our part, especially on possible hypotheses of concentrations to the detriment of the competition".

There is no doubt that Metroweb is destined to become a cornerstone of the future structure of the most advanced telecommunications market, unless it paves the way for the so-called network society into which the networks of all operators would converge under the guidance and investment of Cdp.
