Weather, bad weather: rain, snow and wind in half of Italy

The weather brings bad news to half of Italy. An intense perturbation from Northern Europe brings bad weather to our country, where snow, rain and cold return.

In particular, until 20 pm, in the Levante Ligure there is an orange alert for rain and thunderstorms. “Wednesday – explains the meteorologist of 3bmeteo.com, Edoardo Ferrara – rains and thunderstorms will hit above all the North and the Tyrrhenian regions, with even intense or abundant phenomena close to the Alps, the foothills of Lombardy and Triveneto, Eastern Liguria, upper Tuscany, Lazio and then also Campania by the end of the day: overall peaks of over 90-100mm are expected in the latter two regions. On Thursday the front will be followed by a cold whirlwind that will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to the Centro-South, with local hailstorms and a marked drop in temperatures; in the North, however, the weather will improve”.

Due to the high levels of fine particles, the anti-smog measures are back in Milan, Pavia and Bergamo. Traffic blocks also in Turin.

Snowfalls are arriving in the Alps, especially in the central-eastern ones, with snow above 800-1200 meters, “lower between Piedmont and western Lombardy – explains 3bmeteo – with flakes in the hills of Varese and up to the valley floor in upper Piedmont. Expected accumulations of up to half a meter of fresh snow from 1400-1500m from Lombardy to Friuli. Snow also in the Apennines, initially from 1300-1700 m, but on Thursday the altitude will drop significantly, down to around 300-600 m on the central ridge, 700-1100 m on the southern one”.

As for temperatures, they will drop from Thursday with the arrival of colder air from North to South. In the following days, high pressure will bring back good weather until New Year's Eve, despite some phenomena caused by Atlantic perturbations. Last showers in the South on Friday, then it improves barring snowfall in the border Alps. On New Year's Eve there should be sunshine over almost all of Italy, apart from a few clouds and some showers over the central Tyrrhenian regions and Liguria.
