Merkel, EU: common policy on migrants

A solution shared on a continental level, which also involves Turkey, to solve the migrant case - this is how Angela Merkel responds to the German parliamentarians who ask her to close the borders and place a ceiling on arrivals

Merkel, EU: common policy on migrants

The German chancellor exposes herself on the migrant issue in front of a German parliament increasingly prone to closure.

On the eve of the European Union summit, Angela Merkel insisted on the need to find a compromise leading to a shared solution at the continental level, "It often takes time, but it's worth it", she stated with conviction.

Significant words that contrast with the will of various deputies of the CDU (his own party) and of the CSU who, on the contrary, now support the need for Germany to adopt unilateral measures to control the borders, setting a parallel limit to new arrivals.

"Above all - said the chancellor - we must find a common position on how to protect the external borders of the EU". The will of the head of the German government is to find a solution that actively involves Turkey for which the European Union has already allocated 3 billion euros of support to welcome refugees from Syria and Iraq. The aim is obvious: to reduce the mass flows arriving from Ankara to the old continent.

A mention also of Syria, whose situation has been defined as "unacceptable". According to Angela Merkel it is essential to create a sort of "no fly zone" over the country. Criticism of Russia and Bashar al-Assad, accused of not respecting the spirit of the resolution adopted last December by the United Nations.
