Merkel, Greece cannot leave the euro

In the aftermath of the defeat in the regional elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the chancellor returns to talk about the debt crisis – Greece's exit from the Eurozone out of the realm of possible solutions

Merkel, Greece cannot leave the euro

Angela Merkel has stated that there are no conditions for Greece to leave the euro zone. The German chancellor stated that not only are the technical and legal prerequisites lacking for this to happen but that the defection of a country would set a dangerous precedent, which could jeopardize the stability of the entire currency system.

"It is important that Greece sticks to the promised economic reforms", added the leader of the CDU, assuring that her majority will be compact in the vote on 29 September regarding the expansion of the "state-saving fund".

The declarations burst into a heated climate, where doubts about the opportunity of such a clear-cut intervention to come to the aid of states grappling with the debt crisis are also raised by the members of the government coalition themselves. The electoral blow received by the Christian Democrats in the regional elections held yesterday made the situation even more tense. Merkel ruled out that "the actions taken to resolve the crisis in the euro area have anything to do with the party's disappointing result in the elections".
