Meridiana towards agreement with Qatar Airways: plan for 900 redundancies

Nine hundred redundancies to reach an agreement with Qatar Airways. This is the plan of the Italian airline Meridiana: the alliance with the Middle Eastern group provides for the creation of a new holding company, within which 49% would go to the Gulf airline through a capital increase, while the rest, i.e. 51%, would remain in the hands of the Aga Khan through his Akfed fund.

“It is an operation of financial strengthening – commented the president of Meridiana Marco Rigotti -. A project to be built, but it is an agreement with one of the main protagonists on the scene". Next Tuesday, February 23, a new meeting will be held at the Ministry of Economic Development on the dispute. And on February 29, the Minister of Economic Development, Federico Guidi, will be in Doha and intends to get there with the negotiation on the Meridiana dispute which is not closed but at least advanced.

The news of the redundancies was filtered by union sources, who commented on it with concern: "We are willing to negotiate but 900 redundancies are unsustainable", said the national secretary of Filt CGIL, Nino Cortorillo, at the end of the meeting on the dispute at the Ministry of Economic Development. The judgment on the arrival of Qatar Airways is positive but the CGIL manager said that "it will be a very difficult negotiation, with many unknown factors".
