There are times when we lose the thread of the conversation. Or an idea comes to mind and a moment later we no longer remember it. This is due to the ability of the short-term memory to retain information for as long as it is needed to be used. If this ability is not tenacious and robust, then the information is forgotten before it has been used.
We are at episode number 34 of the column “Mental gymnastics" for a "Winning Brain” the result of the collaboration of FIRST online Professor Giuseppe Alfredo Iannoccari, neuropsychologist, professor at the State University of Milan and president of Assomensana, the association for the development and enhancement of mental activities. Every Sunday a mental gymnastics exercise is proposed on FIRSTonline that stimulates different mental abilities. In banner on the right of our home page or here all the exercises already published are grouped together, which have stimulated a different ability of our brain each time.
Let's remember the basic rules
For each exercise you will be shown:
- which cognitive functions it stimulates
- what purpose does it serve in everyday life
- delivery to carry out the exercise
- how long should the execution time be?
- how to calculate the score
- the finish line for an optimal score
- how to make it more empowering
- which variations to adopt to continue doing so
Mental gymnastics exercise number 34: “The Shrimp Counts”
This week I propose an exercise that use numbers to stimulate and strengthen the ability of the short-term memory to retain information for the time necessary to use it. This exercise develops and strengthens the following mental skills: Calculation, Short-term memory, Concentration, Processing speed
Delivery: Start with any number above 50 and count backwards in twos. Do four exercises starting with four different numbers for each workout. Example: 51, 49, 47, 45, 43 etc.
Execution time: approximately 30 seconds.
Score: 25 points for each correct sequence.
Traguardo: Score at least 100 points in 120 seconds.
Strengthening: count backwards by jumping 3 at a time.
variants: Count backwards by 2 and add one. Example: 57, 55, 56, 54, 55, 53, 54, 52, etc.
