Mental Gymnastics for a Winning Brain. Exercise number 22: “The distracted writer”

The exercise proposed this week by Assomensana on FIRSTonline serves to activate a mechanism that allows us to select alternative words, compared to those that come to mind at the moment, which are similar but more effective

Mental Gymnastics for a Winning Brain. Exercise number 22: “The distracted writer”

Speaking is an art. Use one word rather than another it makes a difference both in how you present yourself and how the message is communicated. It's important choose the words, avoiding automatically saying what comes to mind, since sometimes we might say a word less efficient than others.
So, the moment we are about to say a word, have time to find another one quickly which, although it expresses the same concept, does so in a more effective and positive way.

We are at the twenty-second episode of the column "Mental gymnastics” for a “winning brain”, the result of the collaboration of FIRST online Professor Giuseppe Alfredo Iannoccari, neuropsychologist, professor at the State University of Milan and president of Assomensana, the association for the development and strengthening of mental activities. Every Sunday A stimulating mental gymnastics exercise is proposed on FIRSTonline a different mental ability. In the banner on the right of our home page or here all the exercises already published are grouped together, which have stimulated a different ability of our brain each time.

Let's remember the basic rules

For each exercise you will be shown:

  • which cognitive functions it stimulates
  • what purpose does it serve in everyday life
  • delivery to carry out the exercise
  • how long should the execution time be?
  • how to calculate the score
  • the finish line for an optimal score
  • how to make it more empowering
  • which variations to adopt to continue doing so

Mental gymnastics exercise number 22: “The distracted writer”

This week we propose the mental gymnastics exercise "The distracted writer” for the column “The winning brain”. With this exercise the following mental skills: Language, Semantic Memory, Concentration and Planning.

To train that skill of quickly finding an alternative word it is important to insert a stop mechanism that makes us reflect on word to choose. The exercise I propose this week serves precisely to activate this mechanism which allows us to select other similar but more effective words.

Delivery: Write a short story of your choice with a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 20 words, which however must not contain the letter A. Example: Three victorious heroes lost their helmets while…etc.

Execution time: 180 seconds.

Score: 5 points for each word.

Traguardo: Score at least 100 points in 180 seconds.

Strengthening: write the story without putting the letter C.

variants. Write other stories without inserting the other vowels.

Call. Write the stories you invented in the comments
