Less Co2, gas and renewables: the new Eni model

CEO Claudio Descalzi presents in Paris the strategy that has so far made it possible to spend 600 million dollars on cooperation projects with local communities. By the end of the year, photovoltaic projects for 150 MW will start

Eni changes its model to balance energy and sustainability. Leveraging on three pillars: the cooperation that has characterized the group since the days of Mattei, less CO2 and more gas, with a focus on renewables. “Between 2010 and 2015, ENI invested 600 million dollars supporting about 4 million people through agricultural projects, access to water, health care and education and, in the next four years, will maintain the same level of investment”. This was stated by Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the group, during today's presentation to the financial community of the evolution of the ENI model for the sustainable development of energy resources and the company's new mission.

“We are an energy company. We work to build a future in which everyone can access energy resources efficiently and sustainably. We base our work on passion and innovation. On the strength and development of our skills, recognizing diversity as a resource", added the top manager, explaining that "the crucial challenge of the energy sector is the balance between maximizing access to energy and the fight against climate change" .

Another fundamental aspect of Eni's cooperation model is "the commitment to develop local skills: in the last 5 years, we have increased our share of the use of local resources by over 21% and on average has reached a level of about 80% of local people employed by their affiliated companies”.

In renewables however, the group's turn towards new green projects is more recent. In Italy, the company has launched "Progetto Italia", which aims to implement projects in the renewable energy sector using owned industrial areas: in this sense, Eni has currently identified, Descalzi recalled in Paris, 15 projects for a total capacity of around 220 MW, mainly photovoltaic, which will be installed before 2022.

Abroad, Eni has already launched new projects related to photovoltaics in Pakistan, Egypt and Algeria, for a total capacity of approximately 160 MWp, which will be completed by 2018. Eni intends to adopt 6 final investment decisions (FIDs) by the end of this year, for a total capacity of 150 MW, with plants that will be completed and connected to the grid between the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018. In terms of emissions, the current portfolio of projects would make it possible to avoid 0,3 Mton per year of Co2 for the next twenty years.

Just about the topic decarbonisation, Eni has already reduced its direct emissions by 28% since 2010 and intends to completely eliminate gas flaring emissions by 2025 and to reduce overall emissions per barrel by 43%.
