The war between Israel and Hamas, Russian aggression against Ukraine, irregular immigration, the economic situation of the country, but also the ESM and the Stability Pact. These are the issues that the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni he addressed in his speech in Senate in view of the EU Council which will be held in Brussels Thursday 26 and Friday 27 October. “The European Council which opens tomorrow is being celebrated in a historical phase that is even more difficult than the previous ones. The EU is called to give urgent answers, I don't expect a simple EU Council, assuming one ever existed", said the prime minister, explaining that Italy will face this summit "with clear ideas and a straight back".
Middle East: Meloni wants a structural solution
Giorgia Meloni then expressed her concerns about the consequences that the Middle East conflict is having, in particular on the Palestinian civilian population and the large-scale conflict that may arise. “No ambiguity in condemning in the strongest way i Hamas crimes” and “no distinction on the condemnation of all anti-Semitism. There should be no doubt in upholding the right to Israel to exist and defend its citizens, in line with international law”. However, “the civilians of Gaza are themselves victims of Hamas policies and the two should not be contrasted.” “I consider it vital, at this stage, the dialogue with the Arab and Muslim countries – and Italy historically plays a bridge of dialogue between Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East – to prevent us from falling into the trap of a clash between civilizations which would have consequences unimaginable,” he underlined.
Ukraine: Meloni confirms support in the Senate
At the meeting that will take place in Brussels, the heads of state or government will focus on the latest developments of the war between Russia and Ukraine and on the EU's support for the latter. “In a world where there are no longer any insurmountable red lines, it is an unsafe world for everyone, even for us, not just for those involved in conflicts. It is no coincidence that there were no specific Russian condemnations of the Hamas attack.” For this reason we intend to reiterate "support for the Ukrainian people. We must not make the mistake of weakening support for the Ukrainian cause." Italy looks "not only to the present but to a future of peace, to a European future for Ukraine". Meloni then underlined how "the wheat war is a war waged against the poor". Italy, she said, continues to "condemn" Russia for the blockade of Ukrainian wheat, Rome will make "all efforts" to overcome it "because that choice impacts the countries most in difficulty".
Migration
During the Summit, the topic of migrazione, in particular the negotiations between the Council and Parliament on the reform of the asylum and migration system. “We need to work to stop irregular immigration flows. The flows by sea, because we cannot accept that human traffickers decide who arrives. And the land flows, which make it difficult to filter arrivals: like the Balkan route, where the greatest risks for us can come from." In fact, for the Italian prime minister there is a connection between migrants and terrorism in Europe. Reason that pushed the government to suspend Schengen and reinstate controls at the border with Slovenia. “And there are 11 EU states that have voted for similar measures”. He then announced an imminent measure to combat human traffickers. “Von der Leyen announced this in a letter to the European Council”. “It is a significant commitment that we are ready to support,” concludes the prime minister.
EU: Meloni in the Senate on the new budget rules
"The new budget rules they must certainly aim to reduce public debt but in a gradual and sustainable way, because only in this way will they be credible and applicable, overcoming the mistakes of the past". Meloni continued, adding that the EU asks us to “continue investing in defense and support tools for Ukraine and we do not want, as mentioned, to fail in this commitment. But according to Meloni "calculating these investments that are promoted to us, even by Brussels in the deficit-GDP parameters, seems counterintuitive to us and risks undermining the very sustainability and security objectives that we have set ourselves. For this reason we will continue to support the need to separate, in whole or in part, these items".
“We also believe that imposing some of the provisions in forced stages Green Deal without having previously acted to reduce our strategic dependencies is a mistake that risks having a heavy impact on citizens who could find themselves paying an unsustainable price for the double transition", concluded the prime minister.
