Meloni still takes time on the Mes: "Discussing now is not in Italy's interest"

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the Chamber for Communications before the European Council: "There is a question of method, rather than merit, on how to promote the national interest"

Meloni still takes time on the Mes: "Discussing now is not in Italy's interest"

“I want to say it with serenity but also with clarity: I don't think it is useful for Italy to fuel an internal controversy on the European stability mechanism (Month). Italy's interest is to face the negotiation on European governance, where we discuss the whole in respect of ours national interest. Even before a matter of substance there is a question of method on how to defend the national interest”. A strongly demanding speech was given by the prime minister Giorgia Meloni in the Chamber for communications before the European Council to be held in Brussels on 29 and 30 June. The premier will instead be in the Senate in the afternoon, starting at 15.30.

Giorgia Meloni, who has never hidden her doubts about the reform and functioning of the European system which helps the countries of the Eurozone in difficulty, is once again trying to buy time. And yet, Italy is the only country that has not yet approved the new rules for accessing the European Mechanism, despite pressing calls from the EU. And the margins of delay for the Italian government have narrowed: Parliament will open the ratification debate of the treaty on June 30, but Giorgia Meloni's executive is working to postpone ratification until September. The point I made “is to understand whether this is the moment for Parliament to discuss this matter, that is, whether it is right to proceed with a ratification without knowing the context, without knowing the general framework. In my opinion it is correct to put the problems on the table in their entirety. I want to try to defend the Italian interest, discussing this topic now is not in the Italian interest ”, Meloni reiterated. The goal, as usual, is to take time shifting attention to other topics.

Immigration, defense, Ukraine and inflation

In her statements to the Chamber, Giorgia Meloni takes stock of immigration, defense, Ukraine, economical progress, governance of Europe, and monetary policy. Claiming a "solid, credible, reliable" image of Italy abroad and a country "strong in its reasons and interests, in its tradition". “I say this with pride thinking of the many who advocated a centre-right-led Italy isolated on an international level. The results belie the predictions”. Then the criticism of the ECB: "raising rates can do more damage than inflation", referring to the speech given by the Lagarde in Sintra (in Portugal).

And finally, Meloni calls for the establishment of "a European fund for the sovereignty of states" and claims the historic battle of the right for the self-sufficiency of Italy and Europe. “We must not have dangerous addictions. We need to defend our supply chains”, especially against China.
