Meloni: the four key seats that will reveal the nature of the government and their candidates

The seats of Minister of Economy, Foreign Affairs, Interior and Justice are the ones that will most define the nature of the new government and on which Mattarella will be particularly vigilant - Here are the candidates

Meloni: the four key seats that will reveal the nature of the government and their candidates

Giorgia's first words Melons after the electoral triumph of 25 September they were reassuring and aware that, if the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will give you the task of forming the new government, you yourself and all the center-right will have to demonstrate - not only to Italy but also to Europe, the international community and the financial markets – to be up to a task that is anything but easy, given the moonshine that is looming on an economic and energy level as well as on an international level.

Certainly Mattarella will remind Meloni that Italy's international position and alliances (EU and NATO) are no joke, but the Quirinale will pay particular attention to the profile of the four candidates for key positions in the new government: Economy, Internal Affairs, Foreign Affairs and Justice. But here's who the candidates are.

ECONOMIC: NO TREMONTI AND PANETTA, MAYBE SINISCALCO

The seat of Minister of Economy will be essential to face the challenges that await Italy in a pre-recession and high inflation phase but also to not disperse the legacy of the Draghi Government starting from the full implementation of the Pnrr, on which the The European Union will shine its spotlight. It certainly won't be Julius Tremonti, even if he recently landed in the Brothers of Italy, to return as Minister of Economy both because he is disliked by a part of the center-right and because he is considered at European level among those responsible for the 2011 disaster that brought our spread to stratospheric levels. It won't even be Fabio panetta, the Italian member of the board of the ECB, whose name had been circulating in recent weeks among the possible candidates: his goal is to become Governor of the Bank of Italy when Ignazio Visco's mandate expires next year and therefore he will remain in Frankfurt. A hypothesis that is being advanced under the radar for the very armchair in Via XX Settembre is instead that of Domenico Seneschal who was already Minister of Economy in 2004-5 in the Berlusconi Government and who is currently Vice President and Country Manager for Italy of the American investment bank Morgan Stanley: Siniscalco is respected across the board, knows the Treasury machine and knows the markets financial, but convincing him to leave such an important position will not be easy.

FOREIGN: TAJANI AND TERZI IN POLE

Another delicate seat is that of the new foreign minister whom Mattarella will insist has an unequivocally pro-European and Atlanticist imprint and guarantees fidelity to Italy's traditional international alliances without giving in to Viktor Orban's pro-Russian sovereignty. The word of the Head of State will be fundamental but currently two appear to be the most probable candidates: that of Antonio Tajani, right arm of Silvio Berlusconi and former President of the European Parliament, and that of Giulio Terzi di Sant'Agata, ambassador and former owner of the Farnesina, always very close to Meloni's right. The hypothesis of the current president of Copasir, Adolfo Urso, is more difficult.

INTERNAL: NO SALVINI, PROBABLE A PREFECT FOR THE INTERIOR

The electoral defeat of Matteo Salvini removes a thorn from Meloni who will have no difficulty in denying the return to the Interior Ministry to the leader of the League. Here too Mattarella's opinion will be important but it is probable that the choice will fall on a first tier prefect, as was the outgoing minister Luciana Lamorgese. The names of ministeriabili that most circulate for the Interior Ministry they are those of the former prefect of Rome and former deputy head of the Police, Giuseppe Pecoraro, and that of the current prefect of the capital, Matteo Piantedosi.

JUSTICE: BONGIORNO OR NORDIO

Finally, Justice, another key ministry also in the future Government. The former magistrate Carlo Nordio, who recently joined the ranks of the Brothers of Italy, is certainly among the candidates but it is not said that the seat in via Arenula will become his, also because Meloni will have to take into account the allies and then a a candidate for the Ministry of Justice could be the lawyer and parliamentarian of the League, Giulia Bongiorno who has a reputation as a moderate.
