Meloni, the discontinuity in Europe is an act of courage by the Prime Minister: let's hope she resists

Meloni's choice to vote in favor of the Von der Leyen Commission is a novelty that should not be underestimated. The Prime Minister breaks with her sovereignist past and takes a more decidedly pro-European line that can only do good for Italy and Europe. The important thing is that she resists this choice

Meloni, the discontinuity in Europe is an act of courage by the Prime Minister: let's hope she resists

On the pro-European turn of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who, disavowing her opposition in July, has in recent days approved in the Strasbourg Parliament the European Commission formed by Ursula Von der Leyen, the MEP of the Democratic Party and former mayor of Bergamo is absolutely right, Giorgio gori, who openly appreciated the repositioning of the Prime Minister in Il Foglio: “Good Meloni, she has moved to the centre”. That's exactly how it is and the vote of Meloni speaks clearly because it stands alongside that of the Populars, the Macronian liberal democrats and the socialists who have always supported Von der Leyen and form the European government. Meloni did it for pure convenience because it was the only way to support the candidacy of Raffaele Fitto to the vice-presidency of the EU? Maybe, but she did it and crossed the Rubicon by distancing herself from the usual sovereignists with whom she has so far paired up and starting a pro-European path that can only do good to her, who can finally become a respectable conservative leader and no longer a flag of the far right, to Europe that thus strengthens its majority on an Atlanticist and pro-Ukraine line, and to Italy that recovers the role that belongs to a founding country. Faced with a choice of this kind, parochial interpretations are a waste of time. Gori explains: "It is not Von de Leyen who goes to the right but Meloni who moves to the center and it seems to me that from here, for Europe and for Italy, an opportunity could also arise", especially since "the program voted the day before yesterday in Strasbourg is identical to the one voted in July with the confirmation of the Green Deal and the centrality of the Draghi Report“. In essence, “Meloni has made a choice that goes against the grain of her past by adhering to a pro-European program”. It is right to give credit to the Prime Minister, hoping that she will be able to resist on a line that breaks with the past and that truly brings her closer to Europe. Well done Giorgia.
