Mediaset Premium: 11,11% for 100 million to Telefonica

The capital of Mediaset Premium, the pay TV of the Mediaset group, opens up to Spain. Telefonica will acquire 11,11% with an investment of 100 million euros, which reflects an equity value of 900 million euros of the newly established company which will merge the Alfa Romeo pay business.

“This partnership – reads a note – marks an important alliance between Mediaset and Telefonica for future collaborations in their respective pay-TV activities in terms of technology, know-how and contents. The entry into Premium of a major partner such as Telefonica starts the process of opening up Italian pay TV to further international partners in a logic of development of content production and distribution activities on all pay platforms”.

Telefonica will also pay Mediaset 295 million euros for 22% of the Spanish pay TV Digital+ and another 30 million for the Italian company's failure to exercise its pre-emption right on Prisa's share.

To these figures a further 30 million will have to be added if, in the next four years, subscribers to the platform rise above a certain ceiling. If other collaborations between Mediaset Espana and Telefonica are taken into account, the final amount of the transaction could even increase to around 390 million.

In the wake of this news, in mid-morning the Mediaset share on the Stock Exchange gained more than two percentage points, to 3,78 euros, achieving the best rise of the Ftse Mib, which in the same minutes was in the red by 0,5%.
