Mattarella: "You need unity and growth, I'll be an impartial referee"

The Head of State swears in and speaks to the big voters: "The crisis has increased injustices, give the country a horizon of hope" - "The fight against the mafia and corruption is an absolute priority" - Reference to constitutional reforms and the electoral law – In the EU "the prospect of a true political union must be relaunched"

Mattarella: "You need unity and growth, I'll be an impartial referee"

“The lack of work for many young people, especially in the South, the loss of employment, exclusion, the difficulties encountered in guaranteeing fundamental rights and freedoms: these are the points on the demanding agenda on which the closeness of the State to the people". These are the words of Sergio Mattarella, elected President of the Republic on Saturday, in the inauguration speech given this morning after the oath in the Chamber, in front of the assembly of the big electors.

“To get out of the crisis – continued the Head of State – it is essential that financial consolidation be accompanied a robust growth path, to be articulated primarily at the European level. During the six months of the European presidency, the government duly pursued this strategy. This Parliament presents elements of novelty and change: it has the highest percentage of women and many young parliamentarians. A precious result, which too often politics itself ends up obscuring behind controversies and conflicts”. 

Mattarella also said he feels “the responsibility to represent national unity, also made up of the set of expectations and aspirations of our fellow citizens. Everyone's commitment must be aimed at overcoming the difficulties of the Italians. Talking about national unity means giving the country a horizon of hope. Today there is a need to confirm the constitutional pact which keeps the country united and which recognizes all citizens' fundamental rights and equal social dignity and commits the Republic to removing the obstacles which limit freedom and equality".

Furthermore, according to the President, "it is necessary to reconnect the institutions with our fellow citizens, who perceive them as distant and foreign", which also passes through the need to "reform the Constitution” and approve “a new electoral law. The urgency of institutional, economic and social reforms derives from the duty to give effective responses to our community, adequate responses to the challenges we face”. Mattarella therefore guaranteed that, in the context of this process, he will play the role of a "impartial referee”, but also asked that “the players help him with their fairness”.

Guaranteeing the Constitution, continued the Head of State, “means guaranteeing the right to study of our children in one school modern and safe environment. It means guaranteeing their right to the future. It means recognizing and making effective the right to work. It means loving ours environmental and artistic treasures. It means repudiating war and promoting peace. It means that everyone contributes with loyalty to community expenses national. It means it can be achieved justice quickly. It means that the women they should not be afraid of violence and intimidation. It means removing any barriers that limit the rights of people with disability. It means supporting the familycompany resource. It means guaranteeing the autonomy and pluralism of theinformation , garrison of democracy. It means to remember the Resistance and the sacrifice of many. It means freedom with full development of the civil rights, even in the personal and emotional sphere. It means fighting against a distorted sense of legality: the fight against mafia and the one at corruption they are top priorities. Corruption has reached an unacceptable level”.

After thanking Papa Francesco for the greetings received and having greeted the foreign present in our country, Mattarella affirmed the need to encourage “the activity of judiciary e police force in the fight against organized crime", in which "we had many heroes: I am thinking above all of the judges Falcone and Borsellino". As for the international terrorism, “launched his bloody challenge” and “global answers are needed: only national answers cannot be given. The international community must deploy all its resources”.

In reference toUe, the Head of State believes that "the prospect of a real political union must be relaunched without delay", but he asked the Union for a greater commitment to manage migratory flows and the arrival of refugees within the EU borders: "Italy has done and is doing its part adequately”. Mattarella therefore hoped that i marines Girone and Latorre "return home soon".
