Mattarella summons Draghi for a "high-profile" government

After the breakdown of the negotiations between Renzi and Pd-Cinque Stelle, the President of the Republic launches an appeal to all political forces to create a new adequate and urgent high-profile government: the former ECB president convened on Wednesday at 12.

Mattarella summons Draghi for a "high-profile" government

Skip the Conte ter, we go towards an institutional government led by Mario Draghi or (more unlikely) in the event that the prime minister in charge does not obtain the trust of Parliament, in early elections. After the rupture within the now former government majority and the consequent failure of the exploratory assignment entrusted to the Speaker of the Chamber Roberto Fico, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella immediately took the reins of the crisis back into his hands, summoning Colle for Wednesday 3 February (on the anniversary of his oath at the Quirinale) at noon former ECB president Mario Draghi and launching an appeal to the parliamentary forces to give him confidence: “We need a high-profile government, I will soon give a non-political job. We need an executive in full function, and not reduced to a minimum as happens in the electoral campaign ”.

Mattarella therefore cut off the bull's head: in his speech after the meeting with Fico, the Head of State immediately made it clear that he would avoid early elections in any way. For various reasons: from the Recovery Plan, which must be presented on time and discussed with the Commission (and then quickly applied, so as not to risk losing funds), to the risk of contagion which summoning millions of citizens to the polls, in the midst of the Covid pandemic. Mattarella recalled that the times to dissolve the Chambers, to go to the vote and to form a new executive would be too long (it would take 60 days just to dissolve Parliament and probably months to get a new government up to speed) and incompatible with the needs of the country. Here is therefore the preference for an institutional assignment, which will be entrusted to Mario Draghi.

In the afternoon she had arrived the break between Pd, 5 Stars and Italia Viva. “Bonafede, Mes, Scuola, Arcuri, vaccines, High Speed, Anpal, basic income. On this we recorded the break, nothing else. We take note of the denials of colleagues from the former majority. We thank President Fico and rely on the wisdom of the Head of State ”, tweeted the leader of IV Matteo Renzi. For the Democratic Party, on the other hand, "the break is inexplicable, Renzi breaks not with Conte, but with his allies". For the deputy secretary dem Orlando, “Renzi wanted to blow everything up from the start. I believe that this break was wanted and I believe there is a political design". But then Mattarella thought about untangling the crisis by bringing it back to the tracks of political and institutional rationality.
