Mattarella bis strengthens Draghi, but the 3 emergencies and electoral turmoil require a boost

Mattarella's encore is a shock to Italian politics, but the Premier will have to find a new impetus to face the health, economic and social challenges and dribble around the problems and disagreements that have arisen in the League and in the M5S

Mattarella bis strengthens Draghi, but the 3 emergencies and electoral turmoil require a boost

With a tortuous route, between storms and recurring risks of shipwreck, the vessel of the Parliament has successfully rounded the head of the Quirinal. The arrival has a widespread consensus, not only in Italy. The renewed mandate to President Mattarella from a positive shock to Italian politics and lets hope that the last year of a legislature tormented can produce positive results for the country.

But it won't be easy: for the Draghi Government, that the Head of State is still in office who, having first grasped the need for a team of national unity, promoted its birth, it is undoubtedly a tonic. However, the components of the composite array that supports him in Parliament will predictably be led to unloading demands, disappointments, internal conflicts on the Executive and settlement of accounts with the allies, which the six days of convulsive dispute for the highest Colle have created and/or exacerbated.

On the other hand, emergencies are pressing (health, economic and social). recalled by Mattarella while he expressed his adhesion and respect for the vote of Parliament. And heavy clouds are gathering on the international horizon. This requires the Government to make choices that will have to be timely but will not be easy, even taking into account one factor: the change in monetary policy guidelines that the rush of inflation is already producing in the United States and, albeit in a more limited form, will cause it to follow in the Eurozone.

A really difficult skein to unravel. However, the challenge for the Quirinale has worn down the leadership of almost all political forces and has triggered internal divisions in some lacerating cases. It follows that the Prime Minister is stronger today and has greater possibilities of imposing a more incisive and expeditious trend on government action, compared to what has happened in recent months.

Will it be enough? Difficult to give an answer though two unknowns they do not take on more defined outlines in the short term. The first concerns the trend of internal political processes in place in the League and in the 5 Star Movement which, during the days of the Quirinale, experienced the greatest political upheavals.

For the Alloy it must be considered that its leader had to face a demanding choice: that of safeguarding his presence in the government majority or the relationship with the Brothers of Italy. In the end, the first option prevailed, which would seem to indicate that in the fabric of the League, and above all in the realities of the North, an approach closer to the political-programmatic guidelines of the Draghi government is gaining ground. Which, if so, would be good.

Instead in the Movement 5 Stars the tension between the political leader, the ex-premier Giuseppe Conte, and a substantial parliamentary area linked to Foreign Minister Di Maio has become so evident as to not exclude the hypothesis of a break with repercussions, in this case, less predictable.

The second unknown is related to the destiny of the electoral law, which, in recent days, has returned to prominence in the political debate with a push towards a return to proportional representation that has become more pressing. Ultimately, it is a question that invests more than the Government, the responsibility of the political forces. But the long wave of possible conflicts between the latter, on the merits of the measure to be adopted, could be reflected in further difficulties for the life of the Executive.

The re-election of President Mattarella - whose message to the Houses next Thursday will be important to listen to - is a clear signal in favor of stability. But the chaotic show that has been staged in recent days requires us not to take anything for granted.
