Mattarella to young people: "It's time to build the future"

Mattarella to young people: "It's time to build the future"

As in 1946, when the Republic was born from the referendum, "it's time to build the future“. This is what the President of the Republic claimed, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the Feast of 2 June, “75 years since, with the referendum of 2 June 1946, the Italians, by choosing the Republic, began to build a new history. Even now we are at a hairpin bend in our journey after two major global crises: the economic-financial crisis (2007-8) and the pandemic crisis”, which has shocked Italy and the whole world since the beginning of last year. "As then", said the President addressing above all the new generations, "it is time to build the future".

“Democracy – explained Mattarella, who, barring last-minute surprises, gave his last speech on the occasion of Republic Day because his seven-year presidential term will expire at the beginning of next year – is a composition of interests: fundamental role of parties and social forces“, putting aside controversies and poisons that often prevent our country from achieving the goals of greater growth, well-being and social justice that would be within its reach. “the work – added the Head of State – it is the engine of transformation, but there is no equality between men and women” and the phenomena of tax evasion and those of deaths at work are devastating.

This is why the President concluded his speech with a strong appeal to young people to improve Italy: "It's up to you to write history", just like on 2 June 1946.

As already in the words of Prime Minister Mario Draghi in recent days, with whom the harmony of the Quirinale is very strong, Mattarella's speech struck the tone of confidence and optimism about Italy who is finally getting back up after the tragedy of the pandemic and who, if he knows how to make the best use of the resources of the Recovery Plan and knows how to make the reforms that Europe asks of us, will be able to find the path to growth and the fight against inequalities after twenty years of stagnation or recession.
