The President in an interview on the occasion of the Republic Day: "Italy as a whole is much better than how we ourselves sometimes paint it"

Mattarella: June 2, the best day of Italy

Today "is the celebration of freedom of choice, it is the celebration that brings together all Italians: on 2 June 1946, the introduction of authentic universal suffrage made Italy make a leap in quality". This was stated by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in an interview with Corriere della Sera. And in this first year and a half as head of state "my meetings at the Quirinale or around the country have confirmed my consolidated feeling: Italy as a whole - says Mattarella - is much better than ourselves at times let's paint".

And faced with the uncertainties of our times, the President of the Republic affirms: “The republican and European framework together are the most effective ambit of initiative in contemporary Italy. Global challenges call for global responses. Terrorism, financial crises, migrations: no country is able to face them alone. Europe must not withdraw from its responsibilities”. The moral question: "Corruption exists in Italy - says the head of state to Corriere della Sera - and it is a serious phenomenon, but unlike other places in Italy it is fought and the response of the institutions is felt". And on his little media style Mattarella comments: "It is essential to respect the rules that govern democracy, including not exceeding the limits of one's powers: not even the President of the Republic can assign himself tasks that the Constitution entrusts to others".
