Maria Cannata to Public Prosecutor Trani: "Moody's asked us to reduce rating effects"

Maria Cannata, director general of the Treasury for public debt, revealed that towards the end of last year it received a delegation from Moody's who allegedly asked it to unhook its assessments from regulation: "We want to be able to give our professional opinion calmly" they said, "but we realize that we risk producing consequences that are too vast, too extensive, of altering the balance, even at a geopolitical level, that it is not right that we are given this role”.

Cannata's revelation appears in the information gathering report of the prosecutor of Trani Michele Ruggiero, dealing with an investigation into the rating agencies, based on a complaint by some consumer associations, for market manipulation.

According to Cannata, therefore, Moody's would have been a real appeal: “Determining the fate of countries seems excessive to us, if you can do something to avoid it, would ease the burden that regulation has placed on it."
