Marchionne: "Renzi is going in the right direction"

“The initiative is in the right direction. I don't know if it's enough, it was certainly something new, disruptive, that the country really needed. He has my full support." As Sergio Marchionne, ad of Fiat e Chrysler, commented on the measures announced yesterday by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Speaking on the sidelines of the shareholders' meeting of the Swiss SGS, of which he is chairman, Marchionne added that “we need to shake up the system, otherwise the situation won't budge. Renzi must move forward at the speed of light. We are all behind him. The country will benefit. It is also important from the outside to see the substance of what he is doing”.

Marchionne also said he was "proud of where we've come. The important thing is to finish it. He set himself a rather aggressive finish line. I'm fast, but boy… It would have taken me a couple more weeks. With all these goals, Renzi has a lot to do."

As for the Fiat group, the CEO announced that he expects to reach 5 million cars sold in 2016. The first quarter trading profit should be higher than the same period in 2013, because "losses in Europe in 2014 will be lower than last year despite the investments made”, explained Marchionne.

“The US market continues to do well – concluded Marchionne -. In January and February it was good and March should also be a strong month. The Brazilian market is erratic, but this is due to the uncertainties related to the elections, the economic cycle and the performance of the Brazilian currency. I'm going down next week."
