Maneuver: first green light from the EU

"At first glance", the Italian maneuver of 0,2% seems to have achieved the purpose of correcting the accounts". This was stated by the vice-president of the EU Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, in response to a question from journalists on the 3,4 billion euro package requested of Italy by EU leaders.

“We are evaluating the Italian and other countries' stability and reform plans, for Italy we know that this evaluation is particularly complex because we need to evaluate the debt rule and the 0,2% maneuver. And this (correction, ed), at first glance, seems to be such, ”he added.

The final assessment will arrive in two weeks, when Brussels will have its say on the debt trend and on the risks associated with excessive macroeconomic imbalances, but in the meantime the European leader's words have been welcomed positively by Italy.

This first go-ahead to the maneuver bodes well for the outcome of the analysis of the Italian public debt, now over 130% of GDP, while as regards macroeconomic imbalances everything will depend on the EU's assessment of the national reform plan.
