Bad weather in the North: damage and injuries

An Atlantic perturbation continues to rage in Northern Italy, bringing rain and thunderstorms, especially in the Alpine sectors. In the south there is a marked strengthening of the winds. The Civil Protection has issued a further warning of adverse weather conditions which integrates and extends that of Wednesday and which foresees the persistence of rainfall in Piedmont, Lombardy, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Emilia Romagna.

Strong winds with gusts of storm are expected for today, on Campania, extending to Calabria and Sicily, with possible storm surges along the exposed coasts. Orange alert for hydrogeological risk on the northern sectors of Lombardy and Veneto and yellow alert on a large part of northern Italy.

Meanwhile, around fifty people have had to resort to the emergency services of hospitals on the Venetian Riviera following the passage of the whirlwind that vehemently hit the areas of Cavallino-Treporti, Caorle, Jesolo and Bibione. All have arrived in the various hospitals for traumatic injuries caused by flying objects that have invested them.

The most worrying conditions are those of a foreign woman hit by a tree in Cavallino-Treporti and transferred by helicopter to hospital. For the rest, the wounded, all minor, were received in Portogruaro (21), Jesolo (20) and Bibione (7), while in Caorle there are currently no accesses.

A very violent hailstorm affected the Adige valley along the axis that goes from the north of Bolzano to the villages of Laives and Caldaro south of the capital, reaching as far as Trento. The violent storm yesterday evening, accompanied by gusts of wind, caused the fall of trees which for a short time led to the closure of traffic on the railway section between Bolzano and Merano.

The damage to the apple orchards and vineyards north of Trento has yet to be assessed, which could be considerable, given that in some cases the hailstones were the size of eggs. The violent storm also affected the southern part of the Isarco valley.
