Di Maio: "We're the government, but we're open to discussion"

For the leader of the 5 Star Movement “today the Third Republic begins and it will finally be the Republic of the Italians” – “A government led by the 5 Stars is inevitable, but we are open to confrontation with all political forces. Trust in the President of the Republic”.

Di Maio: "We're the government, but we're open to discussion"

“The fact of being representative of the whole nation inevitably projects us towards the government. We must note that coalitions do not have the numbers to govern. And that's why we take on this responsibility. Today the Third Republic begins for us, and it will finally be the Republic of the Italians". This was stated by the leader of the 5 Star Movement, Luigi Di Maio, in the first press conference after the grillino triumph at last political elections, who have not even delivered the majority necessary to govern alone to the pentastellati.

The words of the number one grillino arrive shortly after those of the Northern League leader, Matteo Salvini, which in turn had claimed the leadership of the government, as the center-right coalition is closer than the M5S to the absolute majority, even if it does not reach it.

A consideration not shared by Di Maio, who however chose to use a particularly institutional tone, avoiding any controversy: "We are open to discussions with all political forces - he continued - starting from the guarantee figures that we would like to identify for the presidency of the two Chambers, but above all on the issues of the work of the new legislature".

Of course, the task of assigning the task of forming the government falls to the Quirinale, but Di Maio said he was "sure that the President of the Republic will be able to guide this moment with authority and sensitivity, as he always has".

As for the electoral result, according to the number one of the pentastellati “it is post-ideological: it goes beyond the traditional schemes of right and left and has to do with the unresolved problems of the nation. It is a result linked to themes, not to ideologies. Issues such as poverty, waste cuts, immigration and security. These issues must be addressed and now we have the historic opportunity to bring to fruition those solutions that we have been waiting for for 30 years. The voters voted for our program."

For the 5 Star Movement "these elections were a triumph - Di Maio underlined again - We thank the approximately 11 million Italians who have trusted us, allowing us to triple the number of our parliamentarians in the two chambers. There are Regions in which more than 50% of the voters voted for us and other areas in which we have reached 75% of the consensus. We are first in Liguria with 30%, in Emilia Romagna with 27%, and also in Piedmont and Lazio, where we govern Turin and Rome".
