Madrid to Catalonia: "Elections immediately"

The Catalan president Carles Puigdemont asked to speak on Tuesday afternoon before the Barcelona parliament to "inform about the current situation" - IMF: "Risks for the Spanish economy".

The Spanish government urges Catalonia to hold regional elections. The clash between Madrid and Barcelona continues after last Sunday's referendum and the will of the Catalans to proclaim independence despite the fact that the central government has repeatedly reiterated the unconstitutionality of the referendum round and of a possible secession.

The spokesman of the executive, at the end of the Council of Ministers, affirmed that "the regional elections would be good for healing this rift", referring to the rift created after the pro-independence referendum. "Everything that will be in favor of coexistence and legality will be positive," he added.

This morning, Catalan President Carles Puigdemont asked to speak in front of the Barcelona parliament on Tuesday afternoon to "inform about the current situation," said parliamentary sources. We recall that yesterday, October 5, the Constitutional Court banned the session scheduled for Monday during which Puigdemont was supposed to report on the progress and consequences of the October XNUMX referendum proclaiming, according to the pro-independence parties, the secession of the Region.

In the meantime, the International Monetary Fund has also intervened on the Catalan crisis. According to Andrea Shaechter, the economist head of the IMF mission in Spain, “the current prospects for the country are positive. But if they continue, the political tensions in Catalonia could undermine confidence in investments and consumption".
