Macron in Strasbourg: "No more selfishness, we risk civil war"

In Europe "the answer is the authority of democracy, not authoritarian democracy". Thus the French president Emmanuel Macron he spoke at the plenary session in Strasbourg, where he warned against the “illiberal charm and national selfishness. We have to build a new European sovereignty to give a clear answer to the Europeans: a sort of civil war is coming to light in Europe,” he added.

“We are in a moment in which great transformations are taking place. The democratic model in Europe is unique in the world and is not dated: it is powerful like no other and at the same time fragile, because its strength depends on our commitment at every moment. Today we must defend it together ”, added the French president, who also held a bilateral meeting with the president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, with whom he described himself as“ in full harmony. We have to unlock the toxic, poisoned debate on migrantsbut also on Dublin reform and redistribution. A sort of European civil war is emerging", Macron warned, once again warning against "national selfishness".

“I belong to one generation that has not known war, a generation that is allowing itself the luxury of forgetting what its predecessors experienced: but I don't want to belong to a generation of sleepwalkers who have forgotten their past and the torments of their present,” continued Macron. The mission for the coming months, he added, “is to defend European sovereignty from the authoritarian instincts of those who have forgotten the past. I want to belong to a generation that will defend European sovereignty because we fought for it. I will not give in to any authoritarian fascination."

Overcoming national interests is a point on which Macron beats a lot during his speech to the European Parliament, and the president of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker agreed with him: "The European Union is not a club led by France and Germany, but a union of 28. Macron's election has given new hope to Europe”, added Juncker, recalling however, in harmony with the tenant of the Elysée, that “Europe is a whole”.
