Macerata, Salvini and the center-right stumble in the xenophobic raid

The mad xenophobic raid in Macerata should have led the leader of the League to condemn racial hatred and violence, but Salvini preferred to take it out on "those who fill Italy with illegal immigrants" receiving the embarrassing coverage of centre-right allies – Vaghi i grillini - Dry words of condemnation of the Government and the leaders of Pd and LeU

Macerata, Salvini and the center-right stumble in the xenophobic raid

The leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, had the opportunity to clearly distance himself from the hatred and xenophobic madness that set fire to the center of Macerata yesterday, where a Fascist-Lega militant attacked black people wildly, wounding six, one of which is very serious, but he didn't have the courage to do it. Instead, he is angry with those who "fill Italy with illegal immigrants" who sow violence, as if the fault of the raid were not the fault of the deranged man or his sympathizer but of Gentiloni, Minniti and Renzi. If Salvini thinks of going to the government with these crazy ideas, the voters are likely to wake him up because usually those who sow wind reap storms.

But if Salvini's words cry out for vengeance in the face of the seriousness of the raid, the cover that his center-right allies have given the leader of the League is embarrassing. Meloni of the Brothers of Italy condemns the young racist yes but with many ifs and many buts and claims on Facebook that "this is how Italy was reduced to the hands of the left". The leader of Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi, is very cautious, who is careful not to distance himself from Salvini: "What happened seems to be the gesture of an unbalanced man but once again he recalls the problem of security in the cities". Even for people of color or not?

Faced with the events in Macerata, even the grillini remained vague: the only condemnation of the crazy gesture came from Roberto Fico but the leader of the Five Stars, Luigi Di Maio limited himself to saying: "Silence, let's not exploit it". A little bit for those who would like to govern Italy but without excluding a possible post-electoral alliance with Salvini's League.

The reactions of the government and the left are of a completely different tenor. The words of Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni are harsh: “No to this spiral of hatred. I trust in the sense of responsibility of the political forces. Criminal behavior cannot have any ideological motivation. Criminals are criminals. The state will be particularly severe towards anyone who thinks they are fueling a spiral of violence". The Minister of the Interior Minniti and the leaders of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, and of Liberi e Uguali, Pietro Grasso, took the same line of condemnation of the events in Macerata but also of calling for the responsibility of the political forces.
