Luigi Di Maio is currently the only pentastellato representative in the running for Palazzo Chigi. In fact, the deadline set by the Movimento 18 Stelle for sending nominations to the primaries expired on Monday 12 September at 5 and, to the amazement of many, neither Alessandro di Battista nor Roberto Fico decided to challenge the current Vice-President of the Chamber.
However, the last word has not yet been said. According to sources close to the M5S, on Tuesday Beppe Grillo's blog will announce whether the race will be solitary or if there will be unexpected competitors (the names circulating are those of Barbara Lezzi and Nicola Morra).
In the meantime, the Genoese leader has arrived in Rome to try to keep the main exponents of the Movement united, now that cohesion and common purpose are needed to face what will undoubtedly be the most important challenge of the short life of the M5S.
The lack of challengers would certainly be a bad blow in terms of image and reputation for the pentastellati, who would certainly face an anomalous electoral campaign.
Di Battista announced on his Facebook profile that he will explain the reasons for his exit from the scene. Even Roberto Fico, chairman of the supervisory commission on Rai, has decided to withdraw, despite pressure from Grillo.
