M5S, Di Maio throws in the towel: he is no longer the political leader

Luigi Di Maio is no longer the political leader of the 5 Star Movement.

“The time has come for a re-foundation. Today an era ends. I have completed my task”, said di Maio during the event organized by the M5s at the Temple of Hadrian to present the regional facilitators. “Many have written to me don't give up. But I will never give up the M5S, the Movement is my family".

“I worked – continued Di Maio – to make the Movement grow and protect it from profiteers and traps along the way, even making tough and sometimes incomprehensible choices. History tells us that some have betrayed our trust but for one who has betrayed at least ten of us, that trust has been repaid”.

Then the lunge: “We have many enemies, someone who resists and who makes war on us. But no political force has ever been defeated from outside. The worst enemies are those within us they work not for the group but for their visibility,” Di Maio accused.

The minister tried to reassure everyone about the future of the government: “We must demand the sacrosanct right to be evaluated at least at the end of the five-year term. I think the government should go ahead, because at the end” of the legislature “the results will be seen but we must have time to clean up the mess made by those who ruled for thirty years before".

Therefore, the concerns about a possible repercussion of his resignation on the Executive have been denied.

During the meeting held in the morning at Palazzo Chigi, the grillino leader had anticipated his resignation to pentastellati ministers and deputy ministers, then publishing a post on Facebook that left little doubt on which path the foreign minister had decided to take.

“Today – said Emilio Carelli as he opened the meeting – we will listen to the important words that Luigi Di Maio will tell us. I don't know if these words will be a step to the side or backwards, what I do know is that on behalf of all we must say a word of thanks for Luigi Di Maio. Thus Emilio Carelli introducing the presentation of the M5s facilitators. “Nothing will change for the government. Indeed, the timetable will go on ”he added.

According to rumors, thehe regency of the M5S will be entrusted to Vito Crimi as a senior member of the guarantee committee. An "interim" appointment in view of the party's general states to be held in mid-March.

"The important thing is to stick together, keep everyone united in the movement, in choosing the path for the future together", said the minister for sport, Vincent Spadafora, leaving Palazzo Chigi at the end of the meeting between Di Maio and the ministers.

"Di Maio was pulled by the jacket, so let's wait for him to take the initiative". The premier said in the morning Giuseppe Conte to the microphones of Nonstopnews”, on Rtl. “If it was his decision I will respect that” although “I will be sorry on a personal level,” he explains.

The step back comes a few days before the regional elections in Emilia Romagna, an appointment which according to the latest polls published before the silence imposed by the law could turn into yet another electoral defeat for the 5 Star Movement.

However, the farewells to the Movement by two other deputies, Michele Nitti and Nadia Aprile who left the Movement and formally requested to join the Misto group, could weigh on the majority. The number of former M14s deputies who sit at Misto therefore rises to 5. In total in this legislature there are 31 parliamentarians elected with the M5s who have passed to other groups, by personal choice or because they were expelled.
