Lufthansa and Air China strengthen alliance

Lufthansa and Air China today signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing to extend their commercial partnership to new routes. The agreement also includes aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services.

The signature came on the occasion of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's state visit to China. The document was signed by Carsten Spohr, chairman of the board of directors and CEO of Lufthansa, and Song Zhiyong, president and chief executive officer of Air China.

"We are delighted that, together with Air China, we will be able to offer our passengers, especially those in Europe and China, more connections and better services in the future," said Spohr.

The new arrangement is expected to take effect with the start of winter timetable at the end of October.

In the wake of the news, Lufthansa shares went against the trend on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, gaining 1,5% to 15,8 euros. In the same minutes, the Dax index travels down by 0,13%, after the publication of disappointing numbers on German industrial production.
